Blogging: How often should I blog?

Helen Bowman • Aug 08, 2018

How often should I blog for my business? This is a question I’ve been asked a few times recently when talking to people about their business blogs. It seems that those who are new to blogging, or who haven’t yet taken their first step into this wonderful world are a little confused about the etiquette appropriate therein.

My answer to the frequency question is simply this: blog as often as you have something to say. Once per week or fortnightly are more than adequate for a general blog, I would suggest.

I’ve heard experts (of which I do NOT purport to be one) spout that one must post every day in order to support a successful blog.

But I ask you: which one of us has the time, or indeed the inclination, to blog every day? In my eyes, setting oneself targets like that is merely setting oneself up for an online, rather visible fall.

Aiming to post every day will soon bring even the most seasoned blogger to his or her knees, both literally and virtually. And the blogging will stop.

Blog don’t live here anymore…

Picture it. You’re happily surfing the Interweb for entertainment, products or services and you stumble across the perfect site for what you’re seeking.

“Yeay!” you think as you eagerly click around the site and drink in the lovely offerings you find within its pages. You notice the site has a blog and wonder, maybe even out loud if you’re that way inclined, “What has this lovely site got to offer me in terms of its blog? Hints and tips? Amusing anecdotes? Some great writing?”…

And so. you delve a little deeper to read the most recent post. *click*

April 23, 2010 the blog announces.

Your heart sinks. Finding an out of date, abandoned blog like that shatters the lovely time you were having up until then. Does the company still exist? Is it still trading? Is there anybody out there? Questions abound, and doubts begin to surface.

This out of date blog might as well be hung with cobwebs and covered in dust. There may as well be a sign hung over the website: Blog don’t live here anymore…

So sad.

Alternatively, finding a carefully maintained and lovingly tended blog provides great reassurance that a business is very much alive and kicking. The business is current, cared for and present in the virtual world as well as the actual one.

Blog, consistently

And so, back to my humble opinion. Write a post when you have something to say rather than forcing yourself to post every day and becoming browned off with blogging.

Treat your blog like you’d treat a good friend. Look after it but don’t try to move in with it. Your blog (as your friend) will soon become tired (and tiresome) if you pester it too much.

Equally, don’t hang it out to dry either. Maintaining a good relationship with your blog takes hard work and a good deal of planning. Whether you’re already an experienced blogger or you’re just thinking of taking that first foray into the blogging world, it’s worth sitting down and working out a schedule of blog post ideas in advance. That way, the blog will not become a millstone – you’ll always have something to write about and your readers will remain engaged, excited and expectant.

Blogging should be fun and a great way of adding value for your website visitors. Don’t abandon it, don’t over-egg it. Treat it right – it’s worth it.

What are your thoughts on blogging frequency?
